Excerpt

“I am done, Bria,” he says, his bloodshot eyes sealed on mine, his voice cracking. He raises a hand exposing the inside of his palm as I gawk at the fine and long lines carving it. “I have to give you something. Here is my bleeding heart. It has ceased beating in my chest, Bria. It’s yours and always has been. Mend it or smash it!”

His words and torn expression snap something inside me, but before I sink to the floor, he grabs me and scoops me into his lap. Tears run down his pain-distorted face, and I can’t take it any longer. I join him, and we weep in earnest for what feels like an eternity. Then, with my head resting on his chest and his arms wrapped around me, we sit here on the floor, an entangled mess of broken hearts and bodies and sad sounds.

I feel a strong urge to caress him, but I halt my attempt to comfort him. Maybe I am completely mad because I’ve always felt this aching need to be there for him, to ease his pain. I can’t rein in myself even after everything that’s happened. He’s the one I can never turn away from, my other half. I feel truly possessed and under the spell and power of something that, although it feels foreign and distant, is still strong enough to make me surrender my all to him. I am far from caring or cringe he will hurt me anymore. I’ve been on the receiving end for a long time now, and it has never deterred me from trying to mollify his pain. Yes, I suppose he might show some sort of disturbed rejection and hurl cruel words my way, but, as always, I will take it for what it is—his particular coping mechanism.

“How can you even touch me?”

I freeze with my hand midway in the air because the last time we were together, he said he despised and loathed me, so, of course, he will not like my caress. Likely sensing my turmoil, he clasps my hand in his and trails kisses down my wrist. His gesture has something reverent in it, and the moisture he leaves on my hand mesmerizes me. I can’t seem to peel my eyes away.

“Bria, how can you wish to touch and comfort me? How can you caress the same person who caused you the most pain? Comfort the one person who’s not at all worthy of it? How can you touch the same person who said those horrible things to you back then, terrible lies out of the mouth of a complete sinner?”

I just stare at him in disbelief, and a fine line spreads on his forehead. Maybe I’m already dead and haven’t noticed it. Perhaps I took too many aspirin with too much wine. I look at the aspirin foil. It is intact. My body trembles with Damien’s closeness, but my mind is far away. He snatches the packet from my hand, and his brows snaps together.

“What the fuck are these, Bria? What are these pills?” He shakes me, but I still can’t utter any words. “Answer me, Bria, or I’ll force you to retch! Do you really enjoy making me lose my damn mind? I am on the brink of my sanity here, and you are not helping.”

The force of his voice rattles the walls. Is he for real? I manage to find a few words. “It’s aspirin. I have a headache,” I lie.

“Stop deceiving me, Bria. It kills me how easily you can lie while looking me straight in my face.”

He clenches my upper arms, and I tilt my head up.

“When did it become so effortless for you, my sweet baby? Can you remember the day I told you I wanted to corrupt your innocence but hoped it would still be there shining in your hazel eyes? What have I done?”

“Gemm-maaa.”
Hunter teased. “You were moaning and muttering our names in your slee-eeep.
Sounded hot. Want to tell us what you were dreaming about?”
Gemma’s
breath hitched, and her eyes shot open. Two pairs of eyes beamed down at
her—Hunter’s azure and Kyle’s espresso. Both guys had smiles as wide as the
Brooklyn Bridge. They exchanged a quick glance, then burst out laughing.
Shit.
“Did you
have a wet dream, Gem? About us?” Hunter bobbed his head in a slow, rhythmic
motion and gave her a you’ve-been-so-busted kind of grin.
Heat rushed
up Gemma’s neck. Knots clenched in her stomach.
They’d heard.
They’d
seen.
Shit. Shit. Shit.
She sat up,
tugging her bra back into place. Damn thing never stayed put. Not when she
barely filled an A-cup. “You wish,” she snapped, unable to look either of them
in the eye. “As if I’d ever have a dream, wet or otherwise, about you two
idiots. That would be more like a nightmare.”
But she was
lying. To herself. To Kyle and Hunter. Her two best friends in the world.
“Here. This
will help you wake up, if nothing else.” Kyle handed her a takeaway coffee.
“Latte, just the way you like it.”
Gemma took
a sip, savoring the dash of cinnamon topping. “Thanks.” But she was in more
need of a bucket of ice thrown over her right now than a hot, delicious,
belly-warming latte.
“Do you
need to go change your panties?” The glint in Hunter’s eyes sparkled.
“What?” She
threw him her most evil stare. “Don’t be ridiculous.” The guys could tease her
all they wanted. She wouldn’t let them get to her. It was just another stupid
dream.
“I could
help you if you want?” Hunter held out his hand, but she slapped it away.
Kyle
elbowed Hunter in the arm. “Okay, dude. Enough.”
Shaking her
head, she jumped to her feet. On her way past Hunter, she rammed her shoulder
into his arm and stormed out of the dressing room.
Chin up,
she strode along the concrete corridor and owned it like she was live on center
stage. There was no way she’d let the guys know her whole body was on fire.
Sipping on her latte, she attempted to wash away the images that flickered
through her mind. But it was impossible. With each step, her heart thudded,
causing the ache that resided there to flare. Each breath sent a shudder
through her entire system.
She had a
problem.
A huge
problem.
She’d tried
to suppress it, hide it, deny it for months, but it grew stronger and stronger every
day.
She was,
without a doubt, in love with Hunter.
But he was
a playboy. He’d never commit. She didn’t want to clock up another failed
relationship to rival her mother’s long list.
She
straightened her shoulders and kept putting one foot in front of the other. She
had one more show to get through, then she had two weeks’ vacation away from
the guys. Surely, time apart would put an end to her wild dreams.
The first
dream she’d had about Hunter had been funny, the next few rattling, but after
four months of them occurring every few days, enough was enough.
There would
be no more fantasies involving him. No more ogling. No more dreaming about his
hot body, kisses, and oh, the sex. No more concocting what-if scenarios.
Because music was all that mattered. With a new record to work on and a fully
booked schedule, she wouldn’t gamble with the dynamic bond she shared with the
guys. Their journey to fame had bound them together. She wasn’t going to fuck
that up for anyone or anything. Not even her heart.
She had to
fix this.
It was
driving her crazy.
Hiding her
feelings for Hunter had become an exhausting obsession. She had to find a way
to stamp them out. Because she remembered all too well what it was like to be
hurt, betrayed, and let down. First, by her father, then her ex-boyfriend, and
always, always, always, her mother.

“I’m sorry that I watched you walk way. I wanted to call you, to come to you after you and tell you what a mistake I’d made.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“I didn’t think you would want to hear from me.”

He bent down and placed his lips on mine, kissing me hard. “How could you think that? Walking away from you was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. My God, Tatum, I was in love with you.”

Tears escaped my eyes as he kissed me again, his hands running down the length of my body. They settled on my ass, and he pulled me into his body. I wrapped my leg over his hip, so he could pull me closer to him. It didn’t take long for me to feel his arousal against me; he was so hard and seemed much bigger than earlier. As his hands ran back up my body, they grazed the side of my breast, causing a soft moan to escape from my throat.

“Make love to me, please,” I moaned as he continued to kiss along my collarbone.

He stilled. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea, Tatum.” He looked from my eyes to my mouth and back again.

I lifted my head from my pillow and kissed him. “Please, show me what it’s like to be loved.”

What Happens at the AirportWhat Happens at the Airport by Brooke Williams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

For Melly Woodruff and Wes Truitt a rendezvous in an airport was a
spark that should have been extinguished as soon as it was over.
Something happened, something that smoldered for years.
Short story approximately 30 pages has Melly and Wes reuniting after years of what ifs and why nots each wondering and thinking of the other.
All I can say is that make out session years earlier must have been one helluva kiss for it to linger in their thoughts.
Like I said it’s a quick read that will provide entertainment while you
eat lunch or wait for your own flight.
The story moved at a steady pace with a HEA.
Sweet with some laughable scenes.
Suitable for most readers, contemporary romance with smooching
and light petting.

book blurb

A nearly tragic accident leads to a discovery that rocks the Sweeney family’s world.

Some families never resolve conflicts. Not so with the Sweeneys. Their sense of family, their love for one another, and their willingness to forgive have always triumphed and brought them back together. Until now. The latest crisis threatens to tear the family apart and crumble the foundation that has always proved itself rock solid.

At the heart of the matter are sixteen-year-old Annie Bethune and her boyfriend, Cooper. At stake are their dreams for the future. As to these dreams, no one in the family holds back when asserting an opinion.

Annie soon begins to feel like a puppet on strings with all those she loves telling her what to do. When those strings become tangled and a family feud develops, Annie, unable to bear the pressure, runs away. Straight into the arms of danger.

excerpt

Straightening, Annie slipped on her hoodie and walked back through the house to the front door. Heidi, her jean jacket held tight against her midsection, waited for her at the bottom of the porch steps, blocking the way to Annie’s car.

“Honey, please. I really need to talk to you. If you’ll just give me a chance to explain.”

Annie glared at her. “You gave up the right to call me honey, or any other term of endearment for that matter, when you abandoned me.” She tried to brush past Heidi, but she grabbed her by the arm.

“That happened a long time ago. I was a different person then. I made a bad decision. But I’m trying to make it right now.”

Annie yanked her arm away. “The decision was right for you at the time. A very selfish decision, I might add. You took off to Hollywood to chase your dreams of becoming a big movie star, and left me with a man who didn’t know how to scramble an egg or balance his checkbook, let alone raise a little girl.”

Heidi’s cobalt eyes glistened with tears. “Was your life really that miserable, sweetheart? I didn’t know—”

Excerpt

TRUMAN GRITT LOCKED the door to Whiskey Automotive and stepped into the stormy September night. Sheets of rain blurred his vision, instantly drenching his jeans and T-shirt. A slow smile crept across his face as he tipped his chin up, soaking in the shower of freedom. He made his way around the dark building and climbed the wooden stairs to the deck outside his apartment. He could have used the interior door, but after being behind bars for six long years, Truman took advantage of the small pleasures he’d missed out on, like determining his own schedule, deciding when to eat and drink, and standing in the f**king rain if he wanted to. He leaned on the rough wooden railing, ignoring the splinters of wood piercing his tattooed forearms, squinted against the wetness, and scanned the cars in the junkyard they used for parts—and he used to rid himself of frustrations. He rested his leather boot on the metal box where he kept his painting supplies. Truman didn’t have much—his old extended-cab truck, which his friend Bear Whiskey had held on to for him while he was in prison, this apartment, and a solid job, both of which were compliments of the Whiskey family. The only family he had anymore.

Emotions he didn’t want to deal with burned in his gut, causing his chest to constrict. He turned to go inside, hoping to outrun thoughts of his own f**ked-up family, whom he’d tried—and failed—to save. His cell phone rang with his brother’s ringtone, “A Beautiful Lie” by 30 Seconds to Mars.

“F**k,” he muttered, debating letting the call go to voicemail, but six months of silence from his brother was a long time. Rain pelleted his back as he pressed his palm to the door to steady himself. The ringing stopped, and he blew out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d trapped inside. The phone rang again, and he froze.

He’d just freed himself from the dredges of hell that he’d been thrown into in an effort to save his brother. He didn’t need to get wrapped up in whatever mess the drug-addicted fool had gotten himself into. The call went to voicemail, and Truman eyed the metal box containing his painting supplies. Breathing like he’d been in a fight, he wished he could paint the frustration out of his head. When the phone rang for the third time in as many minutes, the third time since he was released from prison six months ago, he reluctantly answered.

“Quincy.” He hated the way his brother’s name came out sounding like the enemy. Quincy had been just a kid when Truman went to prison. Heavy breathing filled the airwaves. The hairs on Truman’s forearms and neck stood on end. He knew fear when he heard it. He could practically taste it as he ground his teeth together.

“I need you,” his brother’s tortured voice implored.

Need me? Truman had hunted down his brother after he was released from prison, and when he’d finally found him, Quincy was so high on crack he was nearly incoherent—but it didn’t take much for f**k off to come through loud and clear. What Quincy needed was rehab, but Truman knew from his tone that wasn’t the point of the call.

Before he could respond, his brother croaked out, “It’s Mom. She’s really bad.”

Excerpt:

A couple of boats had been dragged up on the flat of the riverbank. Nobody around. Ian sat in the shade of the largest boat and pretended to be watching the barges and tugboats going past him.

He stole a glance at the house, hoping to spot Finch. Nothing there, but something rising out of the water maybe thirty feet from him caught his attention.

At first, he thought it might be a caiman—South America’s version of an alligator. Caimans were native to the area, although, he had no idea if they lived in this part of this particular river.

But instead, out of the river, rose a young woman.

She seemed to be struggling with…an anaconda?

When the shiny black, long body wrapped around hers, Ian moved, ready to dive into the water to help her, but she had the upper hand and dragged the wriggling beast toward shore with a triumphant smile, and he could see that she had a giant eel.

He couldn’t take his eyes off the thing. The eel stretched as long as the woman was tall, over five feet. They wrestled in the mud, the scene stunningly primal and elemental.

She had a piece of rag tied around her small breasts, and another around her slim waist, covering only the private parts of her body. She was the most stunning sight he’d ever seen, long dark hair streaming down in wet rivulets. A goddess risen.

A goddess in mortal struggle.

His western sensibilities pushed him to run and help, but the woman and the eel and their battle seemed somehow the spirit of the Amazon itself, and he felt like an interloper. He felt that he couldn’t take the woman’s triumph away from her.

And she did win, dragging the eel to shore, grabbing a rock the next second and smashing the eel’s head. The eel was still squirming when, with the same, sharp-edged rock, she gutted the thing, dumping the insides back into the river. She was not a peaceful goddess.

She washed the eel efficiently, then picked up the carcass and carried it, staggering under the weight, up the tall, steep bank, and in through the back door of the house Ian had been watching.
