People say not to believe the things you read
in magazines, but you know what? Most things you’ve heard about me are probably
true.
I totally banged the reporter in the locker
room after the championship game last year.
Those pictures in Expose from last summer?
Those were not modified.
I’m also not really six-foot tall. (But let’s
keep that between us.)
Now, I know you’re wondering about that last
Expose headline—the one about me and my teammate (and ex-best friend) Finn
Miller’s sister, Layla James. That one is a little more complicated.
Here’s the thing: I’ve played football my
whole life. If there’s one thing I know, it’s how to adjust when the game
changes. And if there’s one thing I always do, it’s find a way to win.
Granted, the stakes are higher. The playbook
has changed. There’s more on the line than (another) MVP title. But guess what
hasn’t changed? Me. I’m still Branch “Lucky” Best and I’m not about to fumble
this one.
Grab a seat and a subscription to Expose. I’m
about to make some headlines. (Again.)
A sexy, swoon-filled standalone novel.

“One
question,” Poppy interjects, looking at Branch. “What position are you?”
“I
typically like the bottom so I can watch—oomph,” he says, getting another elbow
from Finn. “Wide receiver. Why?”
Looking at
Poppy, I can’t help but laugh as her eyes light up.
“You got a
problem with wide receivers?” Branch asks.
“You do,”
Finn interjects, giving me a narrowed glare. “They aren’t any better than
quarterbacks.”
Branch
looks from me, to Finn, and back to me. “Why do we not like quarterbacks?”
“My sister
was dating Callum Worthington.”
“No shit?”
His face puckers like he just bit into a lemon. “How in the hell did that
cocksucker end up with you?”
“He didn’t.
We’re not together anymore.”
Branch’s
eyes heat, the look causing my pulse to quicken. “I’m not a bit sorry to hear
that.”
“You better
forget you heard any of that,” Finn warns. “This is my sister, Branch. Not a
cheerleader or reporter or some chick from a dating app. Got it?”
“Finn,
relax,” I say, shoving a swallow past the lump in my throat. “I appreciate the
big brother spiel, but I can handle myself.”
“I know you
can,” he says, pulling his gaze away from Branch. “But you can’t handle him.”

I’m that
guy.
Camilla Landry rustles against me, the silky fabric of her overpriced lingerie
slipping along my bruised rib. The porcelain perfection of her skin is even
more innocent against the colorful ink dotting my own. It’s demure meets damage,
pampered meets punctured. So, yeah, it’s obvious I’m that guy. Dominic Hughes. Her attempt at rebellion.
Her bid to see what the other side of the tracks feel like. I’m okay with being
used because, from where I’m sitting, the other side of the tracks have never
looked so good.

He’s
standing in the doorway, one hand on the sweatpants that hang just below his chiseled
hips and the other leans on the frame. The tattoos that mark his flesh are
vivid against his bare skin, making the blues of his eyes shine.
He flashes
a lopsided smile my way. “Took you long enough.”
“I don’t
drive like a bat out of hell,” I laugh, stepping past him. “Did you shower
already?”
“Yeah. I
smelled like gym floors.”
“As long as
you don’t smell like gym whores,” I say, setting the bags on the table in the
kitchen.
His laugh
is contagious and I feel myself smiling. A set of arms cage me in from behind,
grasping the table on both sides of me. My skin breaks out in a shiver as his
lips find the sensitive spot behind my ear.
His face
buries in the crook of my neck and he takes a long, leisurely breath. “You
smell so good.”
“Keep doing
that,” I say, relaxing my head onto his chest.
“What?”
“Talking
with your mouth against me.”
“You like
this?” he asks all breathily so that each word whispers across my skin.
My eyes
fall closed as I relish in this moment of nothing but him. “No, I love this.”
“Can I tell
you a little secret?”
“As long as
you keep talking, you can tell me whatever you want.”
He
chuckles, dotting kisses up and down my neck. “I love this too, feeling your
body give up the fight of the day and let me take over.” He turns me in his
arms so I’m facing him. “I love that you trust me enough to let your shoulders
sink out of that perfect posture you walk around with.”
As he
reaches up and undoes the elastic in my hair, I watch his features soften. He
moves carefully, unwrapping the tie from the twisted mess in my locks, careful
not to pull.
“There,” he
says, cupping the back of my head through my long tresses, “that’s better.”
“You don’t
like my hair up?”
“Not like
you had it. You look to lunching-y,” he says, wrinkling his nose.
“Lunching-y?”
“Yes,” he
grins.
“You are
too cute.”
“You are
too fucking sexy.”
Reaching
up, I swipe the pad of my thumb over the cut above his eye. He flinches, but
just for a second. “What happened?”
“Bond’s
right hand.”
“I hate
him.”
“So do I,”
he snickers.
“Let’s get
some ice for it.”
He leans
in, his brows tugging together. “Let’s not.” His eyes hood as he takes me in,
his tongue darting out and wetting his lips. My knees weaken, my body humming
with delight at his reaction.
“I want to
take care of you,” I whisper, although that’s really on the backburner now.
“Let me baby you.”
Instead, he
lifts me up and places me on the table. My stomach clenches as he positions
himself between my thighs, my sundress curling at my waist. I ring my legs
around him, pulling him so close that the soft cotton of his sweatpants rubs
against my opening.
He looks
down. “You aren’t wearing panties.”

It’s impossible
not to smile that he remembered my drink of choice. It’s also hopeless to
pretend that the boyish grin he’s flipping me doesn’t melt away some of the ice
around my heart.
Still, I
don’t want to play nice.
“I already
had coffee today. But thank you,” I say politely.
“No
offense, but you are kind of irritable this morning. Maybe you could use
another shot of caffeine.”
“You think
I’m irritable now? Keep it up.”
“You never
were a morning person,” he laughs. “Some things never change.”
“And some
things do,” I point out, giving him a look. “Seriously, why are you here?”
“I have
business with Violet. Remember?”
“That’s
bullshit anyway, but she’s not here. You’ll have to come back later.”
“Is that an
invitation?” he laughs.
“Did it
sound like one?” My arms cross over my chest and I’m aware it makes my boobs
look bigger. As his eyes drop and catch the top of my cleavage, his gaze burns
a trail on the ascent back up to my eyes.
Satisfaction
paints a smug look on my face and desire burns in the apex of my thighs. As
discreetly as possible, I clench my legs together to quell a bit of the ache
that’s beginning to throb under his observation.
When our
gazes meet, his is crackling. He lifts a single brow. “I damn sure hope that’s
an offer to come. If it’s not, we have a problem on our hands.”
“No, you have a problem on your hands,” I
say, shrugging. “It has nothing to do with me.”
“It could.”

Sacrifice by Adriana Locke Cover Reveal & Giveaway

Title: Sacrifice
Author: Adriana Locke
Cover Design: K23 Design
 Release Date: July 13, 2015
Blurb

My life changed forever the night my husband died.

I was left with a shattered heart, a heap of bills, and our daughter, EVERLEIGH. I don’t want to rely on anyone, least of all CREW GENTRY. He’s my first love and the man who almost destroyed me, the man who has let me down every time I’ve needed him.

But when tragedy strikes a second time, Crew just might be my only hope.

My life changed forever the night my brother died.

I was left with a guilty conscience, a pile of mistakes, and little else. I take care of JULIA GENTRY, my brother’s widow and the love of my life, and their daughter. I know she doesn’t want my help, but she gets it anyway. I owe her that. When another disaster hits, I’m given the opportunity to make things right. I’m taking it. I’m willing to sacrifice it all.

Excerpt

“She’s been missing him a lot lately.”

Julia’s voice is barely a whisper and my chest constricts. Our conversations don’t normally make it to discussing Gage unless we’re already arguing. The fact that she just brought it up shocks me and I’m not comfortable with it. I don’t know how to take it. I feel my jaw pulse with frustration and scramble to change the subject again. “Why is it so chilly in here?”

Her smile disappears and she tugs her sweatshirt nervously. “I didn’t know it was.”

“How can you possibly not know?” I start to the thermostat across the room when she clears her throat.

“The heater isn’t working right. I asked Lane to come by and look at it earlier this week.”

“And he hasn’t been here yet?” I shoot her a look and she shakes her head. “He’ll be here tonight.” I dig my cell outta my pocket.

“Crew, don’t. Please. The last time you called my landlord he was a complete jerk to me for a couple of months. I just got on good terms with him again.”

I scroll through my contacts list, looking for his name.

“Crew …” I know her doe-eyes are pleading with me. I also know if I look up at her, I’ll be somewhat inclined to give in. So I don’t.
